Volunteers, gamblers at new Hillview gaming facility lessen financial burdens of cancer patients

A new gaming facility recently opened in Bullitt County and profits help out cancer patients. All of the profits from each machine go into a fund that specifically helps those fighting cancer in the Bullitt County community. Some of the recipients are as young as four months old.

"We were lucky to get this location storefront," Stacy Schuley, who is a volunteer at the facility, said. Ride to Ride Out Cancer Gaming Facility opened November 15, 2023. Schuley voluntarily helps run the nonprofit as the vice president.

I am a 14 year cancer survivor," Schuley said. "I basically lived what our patients are going through. I went through treatment. I tried to work (when) I was going through chemo."

Her story of survivorship is the definition of cancer-related financial hardship. She was 42 years old when doctors diagnosed her with stage 3 breast cancer.

"I worked until I just couldn't do it anymore," Schuley said. "I remember being very upset saying, 'Why did I even get through this just to lose everything I've worked for financially?'" Schuley said she had to ask her family for help.

"But not everyone else has that. So, I take it very personally. I don't want anyone else to have to struggle with that. I want them to focus on their fight," Schuley said. In an effort to lighten their burdens, they've raised nearly $50,000 in just two months via bets.

Every volunteer and gambler is helping someone fighting cancer pay their mortgage or rent, utilities, or water bills. "We do it for passion. I mean, we really feel what our patients are going through," Schuley said. Right now, they're paying bills for 14 cancer patients, with room for more to come.

"We never, it was a dream. I can say we never dreamed it. It's beyond our expectations," Schuley said. The charitable gaming facility originally started as a group that did motorcycle runs as fundraisers. The first run was 10 years ago in honor of a woman named Kathy, who was also diagnosed with breast cancer.

It now serves anyone actively fighting cancer, no matter the type. Ride to Ride Out Cancer won't write a check to its' patients, but it will pay for the patient's bills online. The T-shirts, cups, and other merchandise in the building helps pay for the facility itself.

The space is open Wednesday through Saturday. It's located at 1679 Old North Preston Hwy Suite 24.

The Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce recognized Ride to Ride Out Cancer Gaming Facility last year. Every September, Ride to Ride Out Cancer participates in Cancer Fest.
